THERAPEUTIC PLASMA EXCHANGE (TPE)
COMING SOON
Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is a specialist procedure that separates plasma, the fluid part of blood, from blood cells. The plasma is removed and replaced with a suitable fluid, while the blood cells are returned to the circulation.
HOW TPE WORKS

PLASMA IS EXCHANGED
BLOOD CELLS ARE RETURNED
BLOOD IS PROCESSED
Blood passes through a machine that separates plasma from blood cells.
The plasma is removed and replaced with a suitable fluid, such as albumin solution or donor plasma.
The blood cells are returned to the circulation with the replacement fluid.
A specialist, individualised approach
TPE is used for specific medical indications. Whether it may be appropriate depends on the person’s diagnosis and specialist assessment. The reason for treatment, possible benefits, risks and alternatives should be discussed with the treating team.
